We had an insightful lecture from professional illustrator Anna Steingburg, who also works for the AOI. Anna has been a self employed, freelance illustrator since she graduated from a Graphic Design degree.
Below are my notes from the lecture:
Self Promotion
- Send out regular self promotion, set a day a month for it.
- mail outs should include: the first name of the Art Director (more personal), direct links to emails, blogs etc.
- You can get a response from self promo anywhere between 1hour and 2years, so be prepared.
Things to ask when you get a response
- what will the image be used for?
- size/format needed
- deadline
- fee - don't be afraid to negotiate
- name/contact number
- common fees: editorial - low hundreds, advertising - thousands
Organization/advice
- keep a system/diary of jobs
- keep invoice/expenses in a table with ref numbers
- when you get a job send an 'Acceptance of Commission' form to employer/commissioner to confirm work, fee and deadline, as well as what it will be used for/how may times.
- send through job details to confirm the job
- join the AOI for support with legal and financial issues, also a copy of forms etc
- Copyright is always owned by me
- always send terms and conditions to clients, also found on the AOI
- after the work has been sent to client, send an invoice.
- Name all work on websites with your name - 'emilyhadden' for copyright and to promote your work further.
