Today we had our briefing for our final unit 'EEE' with Joel, where we went through the content of this brief. For EEE we need to write a 2000 - 2500 word critical evaluation, where we evaluate our EMP, other professionals and show future aspirations, planning and development. We also need to design and produce a portfolio/website, self promotion, a CV and show team work and exhibition planning. This unit is to prepare us for work after University and to have a clear idea of where our works sits in the industry and how to achieve our goals.
Joel discussed how as well as an evaluative essay, it is important to consider the ways in which we present our portfolio online through a website or blog. We must also present this unit in a way that is relevant to our work.
This unit gives me a chance to re-design and make my website, as well as my self promotion, portfolio and CV. I plan to treat this unit as a pathway to professional employment.
The briefing was followed by a talk from second year Illustration Tutor and professional Illustrator Matt Johnson. Matt spoke about his years as an illustrator and working for the AOI, which he recommend we all joined. By joining the AOI we can access financial and legal support, as well as general help and guidance.
The talk was a great insight to behind the scenes of illustration, and made me think about possible ways to promote myself and get employment. Matt said, the profession of an illustrator is 50% creative work (drawing) and 50% professional practice ( promoting yourself, doing taxes, contacting clients). So it is very important to regularly self promote and contact Art Directors and possible employers.
This unit is designed to question our own work, and find a position for it in the professional industry, this is something we tend not to think about whilst at University as we are focusing on being as innovative and creative as possible. This unit will be useful and insightful to my future career and the ways in which I can achieve my personal aims.
